Following my graduation from California State Univeristy, Long Beach in 1999 I wasn't sure what to do for my career. My major was finance, and during those years I took many math related courses, such as finite math, business calculus, college algebra, and calculus as applied to micro-economics. I tried some different jobs in the following 5 years but nothing seemed to click. I tutored a little in 2003 and enjoyed it more than any other jobs I'd had. I also taught swimming privately out of my apartment complex and really enjoyed that as well, and continue to do teach swimming during summer time. I dabbled in web design and some other projects.

In 2004 I got a job on the Marymount College Math Faculty in Palos Verdes. I hit the math books hard every night and brushed up on my very rusty math skills. I was in the tutoring center several hours per week at Marymount.....helping students in various math courses to understand their material in a one on one setting. I quickly learned that I had a gift for explaining difficult math concepts. I also really enjoyed helping the students.

The job was very rewarding at a personal level as I felt I was really making a difference for those young students. That "aha!" moment was great to be a part of.

In the fall of 2004 I continued working at Marymount and also got several hours per week tutoring privately in my home town of Palos Verdes. My work now consisted of my job at Marymount and my private tutoring. It was great to finally have some direction in my career. In 2005 I began the network you see here on this web site....at first with just one tutor, then a second, and by 2007 and on to today what you see on this web site.

One of the things that motivated me to start the network was that to get over my rusty math skills for my Marymount job I enlisted the help of many tutors. I found that the majority of them were not very good at explaining the concepts. I found others who didn't know some of the math. What was most shocking to me was that the price a tutor charged often had little bearing on the quality of that particular tutor.

I resolved to form a network where the tutors charged fair rates and (more importantly) were great at what they did. I've found that perhaps one in five "tutors" is really good at what he/she does, and I've made my top priority to allow into the network those top 20%....only the nines and tens.

I've studied the complex in-home tutoring industry quite a bit in the last four years and would be happy to discuss what I've learned to anyone looking for a tutor....even if you just want info and are not interested in going with our network. There are many good organizations out there and many poor ones as well.

When I'm not tutoring my interests include going to movies, swimming, reading any good book I can get my hands on, eighties music, and watching TV with my cool hamster Mr. Bale. I currently live in South Torrance and was brought up in Palos Verdes not too far from Peninsula high school, or Roling Hills High School as it was called when I was a freshman. I attended Soleado grade school and Ridgecrest middle school.
